The GreenEO consortium gathered on 18–19 March 2026 at the KNMI headquarters in De Bilt (Netherlands) for its first General Assembly meeting after one year of project activities.
This two-day meeting provided an important opportunity for partners to reflect on the added value of the project, review progress, align priorities, and plan the next phase of the project, which focuses on developing Earth Observation–based solutions for environmental monitoring and decision-making across Europe.
Reviewing Progress After One Year*

The meeting opened with a comprehensive overview of the project’s progress, presented by the project coordinator Leonor Tarrasón (NILU). She highlighted key achievements during the first year, as well as the expected impact of GreenEO in empowering decision-makers with advanced satellite-based tools to address environmental challenges.
A central part of the programme focused on the GreenEO modelling framework and its added value, with dedicated sessions covering:
- Air quality and zero-pollution policies in urban environments
- Agricultural emissions and biodiversity impacts
- Forest fire danger monitoring
- Ecosystem and biodiversity monitoring
These sessions illustrated how partners integrate satellite data into a range of modelling tools for each focus area, a key component in developing robust and scalable solutions for environmental challenges.
Use Cases and Stakeholder Engagement
Another key topic was the development of use cases and stakeholder engagement strategies, essential for ensuring that project outputs respond to real-world needs.
Partners shared early experiences from user sessions and discussed stakeholder expectations, leading to a constructive exchange on refining approaches to green transformative governance. For example, the consortium discussed the success of a webinar with fire service stakeholders, helping the project to better understand the practical value of its data and the formats required to ensure it is accessible, relevant, and usable in real-world emergency response contexts. These discussions also highlighted previously overlooked needs and emerging challenges, informing efforts to maximise the project’s overall impact.
Planning Year 2 Activities
The second day of the meeting started with planning the 2026 work programme, with parallel working group sessions organised for each thematic work package.
These sessions focused on defining priorities, upcoming challenges, and key tasks across areas such as governance, urban air quality, agriculture, forest fire monitoring, and ecosystem analysis – ensuring alignment across partners and reinforcing the collaborative approach of the consortium.
Dedicated discussions also addressed communication, dissemination, and pathways to support the future uptake of GreenEO solutions. In this second year, the focus will be on delivering key outputs, including deliverables on existing policies and governance models, user workshops, biomass detailed maps and time series for use cases, as well as datasets on satellite-derived nitrogen emissions, SMESH and Retina outputs, and MTG GFAS, which will be made available on GreenEO’s library page.
Reflecting on this transition into the second year, the project coordinator, Leonor Tarrasón, noted:
“After this valuable first year developing our tools in the separate topics for cities, agriculture areas, forests and biodiversity, it is now time to align our efforts to identify our added value and involve key stakeholders in the creation of innovative, sustainable and competitive environmental management approaches using satellite information”

Looking Ahead: Data and Integration
The final sessions focused on data access and integration, including discussions on satellite data sources, data spaces, common formats, and the creation of the GreenEO data portal.
These exchanges highlighted the importance of interoperability and data accessibility in supporting the development of effective Earth Observation services.
The meeting concluded with a summary of key actions and next steps, reinforcing the consortium’s shared commitment to delivering impactful, science-based solutions.
Strengthening Collaboration
Beyond the technical discussions, the General Assembly provided a valuable opportunity for partners to connect in person, strengthen collaboration, and align on common objectives.
